The SOS went through. Rescuers still had to walk
Tacoma Mountain Rescue reported that a hiker in his 20s sent an SOS with a Garmin inReach during a storm in Lewis County. He was around 7,000 feet on the Pacific Crest Trail. His tent was being torn apart and he could no longer walk. Helicopters were grounded. Daily Dispatch, September 28, 2026
Five rescuers hiked about eight miles and reached him around 1:30 a.m. They rewarmed him overnight. The group walked out the next morning with help from Pierce County Explorer Search and Rescue. The messenger let him report the emergency. It did not remove the hours between that report and help arriving. Daily Dispatch
A separate Enchantments incident
On September 13, 2026, RiverCom received a text-to-911 report at about 5:26 p.m. from a man in the Enchantments core zone. He reported that his wife could not move. The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office account says their clothing was soaked and they had no overnight gear. She died before rescuers could reach her. Sheriff’s account reproduced by Manson Tribune
These were different incidents. The Enchantments report does not tell us that a satellite messenger would have changed that outcome. It shows why a way to contact help and equipment for waiting are separate parts of a trip.
Do not count on a phone signal in the permit area
The app tells hikers to expect no service in the permit area. A signal at one point does not establish coverage for the route. Download what you need before leaving. Enchantments app emergency information
Two-way messengers let you exchange information after sending an SOS. Garmin inReach and ZOLEO offer that function. SPOT X is also two-way. SPOT Gen4 is a different category of device and does not provide the same text conversation. Garmin, ZOLEO, SPOT
A 406 MHz personal locator beacon sends a distress alert. It does not work like an ordinary text conversation. Register it and keep the emergency contact information current. NOAA
Check what your phone already supports
Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite works on iPhone 14 and later in the US and Canada when the stated software and purchase-region requirements are met. You must be outdoors with a view of the sky and horizon. Apple provides a demo to practice connecting before a trip. Apple
Trees and terrain can interrupt the connection. Follow the onscreen directions and wait for confirmation that a message was sent. A downloaded map does not send an SOS. Apple satellite connection guidance
Activate and test before leaving
Check the subscription and battery. Follow the manufacturer’s test procedure. Show your hiking partner where the SOS control is and how to use it. Do not trigger a real SOS as a practice test. Garmin support, Apple satellite demo
For one current cost example, ZOLEO’s US plans run from $19.99 to $34.99 a month, with a three-month minimum. Activation fees and optional features add to the cost. Check the provider’s current terms. Prices were checked October 2, 2026. ZOLEO
Carry the device where you can reach it if you cannot reach your pack. Follow its instructions for antenna position and sending messages. Do not assume a message went through because you pressed a button. SPOT user guide, Apple
Keep forecasts separate from trail conditions
The Enchantments app shows National Weather Service forecasts and alerts. Those are agency weather reports, not observations of every stream crossing or patch of snow on the trail. Read the forecast time and the current Forest Service instructions before the hike. The app does not provide emergency communication. See the packing page for the rest of the gear list.
